Words I Learned

February 12, 2007 by Brad Leave a reply »

I don’t know if men are intentionally shielded from certain words to keep from being totally terrified of having a baby, but I heard some words over the past few weeks that I never knew existed. Here are some words that I’ve learned during Levi’s birth and stay in the NICU that I had never heard before (guys, you’ve been warned):

  • Bilirubin (NOT a type of reuben sandwich as I would have expected)
  • Lanugo (NOT a beach somewhere)
  • Colostrum (NOT the name of a stadium somewhere)
  • Meconium (NOT a rare-earth metal)

Funny funny….unfortunately, I’ve heard and know all those words too much. It’s still freakish though when you hear it. My little one loved meconium so much it gave her a 5 hour NICU stay. Hope all is well in the land of poop, pee, & spit up. Enjoy every minute though…they are such cutie patooties when they are still so small!

    Hey, Girl,

Wow – what a vocabulary lesson…I was familiar with a couple of the words but the last one was a doozy! (literally :-) It’s really amazing how much non-mothers and fathers are protected from the mysteries of childbirth! Thanks for bridging the gap…Levi is precious and I can’t wait to meet him! Let me know when it’s safe for him to have visitors and I’ll stop by after work one night.

    Love you guys!
